Habits and Addictions

Good habits are worth being fanatical about ~ John Irving

Many of us have habits  and addictions we would like more control over, from nail biting to hair pulling and even stuttering (yes believe it or not, that is a habit too!) It can apply to many things but to keep things simple, ask yourself – is there something in my life that I do routinely that I wish I had more control over? If yes, shaanti wellness can help.

Habits or addictions could include:

  • Mobile screen
  • Social media
  • Computer games
  • Nail biting
  • Smoking
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Chocolate munching or snacking
  • Stuttering
  • Hair pulling
  • Nervous tics
  • Biting lips or cheek
  • Itching/scratching
  • Shouting
  • Anger

Addictions can be thought of as unhelpful habits. For example, it is not usually the cigarette we are addicted to but the feeling we associate with having a cigarette. Some may associate a cigarette with a sense of escapism, for others it may be to eliminate boredom or fill a void in their lives. Consider how liberating it could be to substitute unhelpful habits with things that make you feel better? Get in touch to see how shaanti.wellness can help.

How can Shaanti Wellness help me?

shaanti.wellness use a multi-faceted approach to ensure habits are addressed and there is less chance of reverting to old habits. The approach includes the use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help facilitate thinking centred on the implications of the habit; this includes a short morning protocol too. Shaanti.wellness combines this with Hypnotherapy – this helps reinforce positive beliefs about yourself and your ability to achieve your goals, which in this instance is to rid an unwanted habit. We very often find client’s experience positive changes in other areas of their lives due to use of the two most powerful psychological therapies combined. If you think this is for you get in touch.

How long can I expect it to take?

This all depends upon the complexity of the habit/addiction. For simple habits such as nail biting and hair pulling, we usually expect 3 sessions. Addictions can be more complex, a minimum of 5 sessions is advisable. This enables the adequate time to give you the right tools, which help prevent re-occurrence. If there is a re-occurrence, you are equipped with the necessary skills and techniques to deal with the challenge – the idea is to empower you. For example, smoking cessation studies have shown a correlation between the number of attempts made to give up smoking and succesfully giving up. We very often find client’s experience positive changes in other areas of their lives due to use of the two most powerful psychological therapies combined.
